Let’s start by moving past the terrible pun (Not one of my best), and mosey down to Crabapple Kitchen. Although often hard to get a table, Crabapple Kitchen boasts an exciting breakfast and lunch menu which sees people flock to 659 Glenferrie Rd, Hawthorn. It’s a menu which the kitchen states has a “strong Mediterranean influence” and the menu is changed seasonally to suit produce available. One of the menu favourites of mine (pictured above) is probably one of the most simple items on the breakfast menu, however it includes some of my favourite combinations:
Avocado on olive toast with Meredith Dairy soft feta, chilli, mint, avocado oil & lemon $17.5 —
Add a poached egg -$3
Stop it. Seriously good.
Pictured on the opposite side of the table is the good ol’ big brekky:
2 free-range eggs on sourdough with bacon, roasted tomatoes & mushrooms $18.5
The cafe has a cosy feel inside, and includes a large outdoor on the back deck for those warmer mornings. As mentioned earlier, it can be tricky getting a table as it one the favourites along the strip, so getting down there a little earlier can never hurt.
Here are some other favourites worth mentioning:
–Softshell crab in a warm brioche bun with Granny Smith apple, fennel salt, celery & mustard cress salad and Kewpie mayonnaise $12
–Crispy skin seared NZ Ora King salmon with Caponata our way – smoky eggplant, semi-roasted cherry tomatoes, grilled zucchini, capers and pine nuts $19.5
–Myrtleford buttermilk pancakes with pears, salted pine nut & almond praline, orange blossom & vanilla mascarpone and pure Canadian maple syrup $17.5 — Add bacon $4
